Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024. It helps compatible AI applications connect to external systems — such as business software, databases, and services — through a consistent interface.
Without a shared standard, many AI-to-tool connections require separate custom integrations. MCP provides a reusable approach, although each system still needs the right setup and permissions.
